Leon Rosselson - Song of the Old Communist

He was one of those dogged old men
Who lived in the past
Telling stories you don’t want to know
About how it was then, the hunger, the hardship
The hopes and the struggles of so long ago

And we must have looked bored,
For like sparks from the cinders,
His eyes glowed with anger, his words seemed to burn;
He said “I will be heard, for my life is not over;
I’ve something to say yet, you’ve something to learn.”

He said, “You, who have nothing at all to believe in;
To you, whose motto is, ‘money comes first’;
Who are you, to tell us that our lives have been wasted?
That all that we’ve fought for has turned into dust?

"I was only a lad when we read that in Russia,
The workers, the Soviets, had taken all power,
And the man they called Lenin, who led them,
Was our inspiration; his triumph was our finest hour.

Painting Breaking Family Ties in 1890, Thomas Hovenden portrayed an American reality: “The 1890s saw the decline of small family farms and the necessity of young sons leaving the land to make a living in the city or on what little was left of the frontier…, and,” as the Smithsonian American Art Museum points out, “the composition gave American families a visual record of their own turmoil.”

The built-in corner cupboard, the plain and fraying tablecloth, and the mismatched hand-turned chairs speak to the longevity of the family.

The worn oilcloth flooring and plain white tea set (in stoneware, or possibly enamel, to judge from the opacity) speak to their poverty.

It is, as the Smithsonian American Art Museum puts it, one of the “indoor scenes of everyday life that won him great success and popularity”—but not, in this case, a timeless sort of genre scene.

Instead, the picture marks the transition in the 19th century towards urban life, a transition which might well have echoed his own immigrant’s experience moving to the United States.

"Prison doctors have sterilized over 150 women. Why? They don’t want to have to provide welfare funding for any children they may have in the future. Although such procedures may seem harsh, they are not illegal. The Supreme Court ruled in 1927 that women can be forcibly sterilized in jail in Buck vs Bell. Writing for the majority, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said, “Three generations of imbeciles are enough.”

"What’s false conciousness?" asked Ron curiously. I knew he would be more open to communist ideas because he was part of the proletariat, whereas Hermione was part of the bourgeois intelligentsia.
"False conciousness is when people think communism is bad, " I explained. "Since communism is good, it means they’re obviously insane."
"Harry, are you a communist?" asked Hermione in a quiet voice. I could tell she was scared, probably of losing her private property.

Oh yeah. Oh yeah, we’re gonna try and do it without blowing the power this time,
yeah. So once again, I ask you to raise your hands because you got free pop and
chips today. Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, you’re beautiful. Oh, oh oh oh, I ain’t never
seen nothin’ like this before. Oh oh oh oh. It brings a tear to my eye, oh yeah.
Lookit! Lookit, isn’t it beautiful? Yeah! Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Oh oh oh oh
yeah, You’re beautiful, you’re beautiful, yeah, you played that purdy, yeah.

I heard it from a friend on that long and lonesome highway,
”Be ready for love, and every fork in the road,”
And my and my baby, it’s a sweet tart, yeah,
So bitter to the taste and so heavy on the heart,
SO I LIFT UP MY HANDS, LIGHT UP THE SKY FOR
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!
PARTY ALL DAY, PARTY ALL NIGHT!
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!

Yeah. Oh yeah. Oh, you are playin’ that so purdy. Yeah, oh yeah, give it to me one
more time. Oh yeah. Hello, bretheren. Gimme your hand. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, you’re
beautiful. Oh. Yeah. Hello. Hello. Yeah. Hi. You’re beautiful. Yeah. Oh yeah.

It seems that day that the music died, yeah…
I drove my chevy to the ocean, but the ocean was dry,
And my and my baby, it’s a sweet [told ya] tart, yeah,
So bitter to the taste and so heavy on the heart,
SO I LIFT UP MY HANDS, LIGHT UP THE SKY FOR
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!
PARTY ALL DAY, PARTY ALL NIGHT!
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!

Oh yeah, you are so beautiful. Yes. Yes. Oh yes. You are beautiful. Yes. Oh. HA!
You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful. Oh. Oh yeah.

I shoulda stayed in college, another town dead and gone,
I shoulda stayed in college, another town dead and gone,
I shoulda stayed in college, another town dead and go-o-o-o,
LIFT UP YOUR HANDS, LIGHT UP THE SKY
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!
PARTY ALL DAY, PARTY ALL NIGHT!
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!
PARTY ALL DAY, PARTY ALL NIGHT!
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!
PARTY ALL DAY, PARTY ALL NIGHT!
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!
PARTY ALL DAY, PARTY ALL NIGHT!
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!
PARTY ALL DAY, PARTY ALL NIGHT!
SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK-N-ROLL!

Oh. Yeah. You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful, Hollywood. Thank you. Thank you very
much. Thank you. We love you. Thank you. You’re beautiful. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Oh
yeah. As me and the boys will keep on playin’ this same old anthem song.

I shoulda stayed in college, another town dead and gone.

(Cries) they were beautiful, weren’t they? Oh. Ohhh. Ohhh. Thank you. Thank you.
Good night. Ohh. Ohhh ho ho. Thank you. Ohhh huh huh. Oh yeah. Thank you, good night.
